Study in Canada Scholarships: A Gateway to International Education

Are you an international student aspiring to study in Canada? Look no further! The Study in Canada Scholarships program offers exciting opportunities for students from various countries and territories to embark on short-term exchanges for study or research. This initiative aims to strengthen and diversify international linkages for Canadian post-secondary institutions while promoting academic and research excellence in new markets.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Study in Canada Scholarships, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen of one of the eligible countries/territories, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Taiwan, Türkiye, Ukraine, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda.
  • Enrollment: You must be a full-time student enrolled at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country/territory.
  • Tuition Fees: You should be paying tuition fees to your institution at the time of application and for the entire duration of your exchange.

However, please note that you are not eligible for this scholarship if you hold or have a pending application for Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, are already participating in a scholarship program funded by the Government of Canada, or are enrolled in a degree, diploma, or certificate program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

Canadian post-secondary institutions interested in hosting students must also meet specific requirements. They must be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and have a valid student exchange agreement in place with the student’s home institution, waiving tuition fees for scholarship recipients (required for college/undergraduate study only).

Scholarship Value and Duration

The Study in Canada Scholarships program offers different award components based on the level and duration of study or research. The scholarship values and durations are as follows:

Award Component Value Duration Activities
College/Undergraduate (4 months) $10,200 Four months or one academic term Study or research at the college or undergraduate level. A valid student exchange agreement that waives tuition fees is required.
Graduate (4 months) $10,200 Four months or one academic term Study or research at the graduate level (Masters and PhD). A student exchange agreement is not required.
Graduate (5-6 months) $12,700 Five to six months Study or research at the graduate level (Masters and PhD). A student exchange agreement is not required.

These scholarships cover various expenses, including visa or study/work permit fees, airfare, health insurance, living expenses, ground transportation, books and supplies required for study or research (excluding computers and other equipment). The scholarship also provides additional support to Canadian institutions for administrative costs and reimbursement of employer compliance fees.

Application Process

The application process for the Study in Canada Scholarships involves multiple steps for both Canadian institutions and eligible students.

Canadian Institutions:

  1. Promote the Scholarship: Canadian institutions interested in hosting students should raise awareness about the scholarship among faculty, staff members, and eligible partner institutions.
  2. Explore Partnerships: Establish student exchange agreements with eligible partner institutions to facilitate the scholarship program.
  3. Application Submission: Assign a program coordinator to complete applications on behalf of eligible students. Create an account on the scholarship portal and select the Study in Canada Scholarships program in the “For Non Canadians” section. Enter the required data, upload supporting documents, and verify the information before submission.
  4. Ranking of Applications: Based on the institution’s strategic priorities, a ranking of applications should be sent to the scholarship administrator.

Students:

  1. Check Eligibility: Review the eligibility requirements to determine if you qualify for the scholarship.
  2. Check Exchange Agreement: Inquire with your international office to see if your home institution has an exchange agreement with a Canadian post-secondary institution.
  3. Contact International Office: Get in touch with your international office to learn more about the application process and any admission requirements for the Canadian institution.
  4. Prepare Supporting Documents: Gather the necessary documents, including proof of citizenship, signed Privacy Notice Statement, letter of intent, proof of full-time enrollment, letter of support from the home institution, and letter of invitation from the Canadian supervisor (for graduate students). Ensure that all documents meet the specified requirements.
  5. Submit Application: Follow the instructions provided by your Canadian institution to complete and submit the application.

Selection Criteria and Key Dates

Applications for the Study in Canada Scholarships program are evaluated based on various criteria, including the merit of the proposed research or study, the benefits to the home institution, Canadian institution, and supervisor, and the strength of the linkages to be created through the exchange. The rankings submitted by the Canadian institution also play a role in the selection process.

It is important to note that priority is given to students who have not previously received a scholarship under a Global Affairs Canada Short-term Exchange Program.

The key dates to remember for the scholarship application process are as follows:

  • Application Deadline: Canadian institutions must submit online applications on behalf of students by 11:59 p.m. EDT, March 21, 2023. It is advisable for Canadian institutions to establish an earlier deadline with students and their home institutions to ensure timely receipt of supporting documents.
  • Notification of Results: The scholarship administrator will communicate the results to Canadian institutions in the spring. Institutions are responsible for notifying students of their application’s status.
  • Student Arrival in Canada: Selected students may arrive in Canada as early as August 1, 2023, for the fall semester and no later than February 1, 2024, for the winter/spring semester. It is crucial for students to submit their visa or study/work permit application well in advance to avoid any delays.

Scholarship Conditions and Additional Information

Successful students who are awarded the Study in Canada Scholarships must adhere to certain conditions, including engaging in full-time studies or research as defined by the Canadian institution, focusing primarily on their academic pursuits during the scholarship period, and returning to their home institutions after the exchange to complete their studies.

It is important to note that scholarships cannot be deferred or renewed. They are subject to the availability of funding from the Government of Canada and are not taxable for either the Canadian institution or the scholarship recipient.
